What particular Deweyan ideas are you most interested in?
Dewey supported the development of a philosophy for education within an educational setting. It adds to my perspective because Dewey believed in in choice, agency, and an understanding of a form of “free will”, rather than empiricism or determinism. His theory is in line with transformational, context-based learning theories that support multiple sensory experiences and active learning that supports meaning making. Dewey’s theories also connect well to Suzanne Langer’s theories for the connections between language and meaning making, cultivating the individual through activity.
What arenas of practice are you interested in working in?
arts, higher education, curriculum issues, environment, community renewal
Say more about issues of practice that interest you.
I have worked as an artist, and as a K-12 Art Educator. Currently, I am an an adjunct professor in Humanities, hoping to create more interest in the American experience through the study of art and literature. My dissertation is a comparative historiography of school gardens as seen through an ecoliteracy perspective.
What specific activites do you hope the John Dewey Society can undertake?
I would like to see a strong involvement in educational policy reform.
